Questions about the Norwegian tests

Common questions about the Norwegian citizenship and social studies tests, and how Path to Norway helps you prepare.

What is the Norwegian citizenship test?
The citizenship test (statsborgerprøven) checks your knowledge of Norwegian society, history, and everyday life. It is taken in Norwegian and is required when you apply for Norwegian citizenship.
What is the difference between the citizenship test and the social studies test?
The social studies test (samfunnskunnskapsprøven) is required for permanent residence and can be taken in many languages. The citizenship test is taken in Norwegian and is for citizenship — if you take the social studies test in Norwegian, it can also count toward citizenship.
Can I practise in my own language?
Yes. Study material, explanations, and practice questions for the social studies (residence) test are available in 23 languages. Citizenship-test practice is in Norwegian, matching the official test.
How does Path to Norway help me prepare?
You take realistic mock tests in the same format as the official exam — about 60 minutes — with instant feedback. For every question you see the correct answer, why it is right, and a link to the official source, plus a category breakdown so you know exactly what to revise.
Is it free to use?
Yes — you can take a full mock test for free, with no card required. Paid plans add unlimited practice tests, smart correction with official sources, and progress tracking across every category.
